There were six large ShootNC targets mounted on a plywood board 40 yards away. I watched outdoor writers Ron Gayer and Jim Niemiec each pick up the Winchester shotgun, load a 3-inch Winchester Supreme Elite Xtended Range Turkey load, take aim, and totally cover the target they were aiming at. Next my dad tried it the same results. Now it was my turn. After I pulled the barrel back down from the shot, it was easy to see that I had also totally covered the target with pellets. Our comments consisted of how no turkey would have been alive after those shots. I was at the Winchester/Browning Annual SHOT Show Outdoor Writers Shooting Event in Las Vegas. Winchester Ammunition had just announced that they were expanding their popular line of turkey loads this year to include #4 shot in both 3-inch and 3 1/2-inch, 12-gauge loads for the Supreme Elite Xtended Range. The Xtended Range loads use shot that is 10% denser than lead and delivers superior downrange performance. Our shooting that day was proof of the downrange performance. The #4 shot loads should give a little more downrange energy. The muzzle velocity of these new loads is 1225 fps. The 3 1/2-inch load will have 2 ounces of #4 shot and the 3-inch load will have 1 3/4 ounces. You can bet that I will have the Xtended Range loads with me this spring turkey season.
