The California DFG in cooperation with the Kern Water Bank Authority will permit waterfowl hunting on a limited area of the Kern River Fan, near Bakersfield. The entrance to the hunt area is two miles west of Enos Lane on Stockdale Highway. The first hunt day was October 22, 2005. Subsequent hunts will take place each Wednesday and Saturday through January 29, 2006. The DFG and/or the Kern Water Bank Authority may cancel subsequent hunts with no further notice. The Kern River Fan will be filled by a combination reservation/lottery drawing with the first reservation being issued for October 22, 2005. Hunters receiving a reservation must pick up their entry permits and redeem their reservations on the Tuesday or Friday prior to their hunt date between 1-7 p.m. at the Kern National Wildlife Refuge (KNWR) check station. A separate lottery drawing will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday evenings at the KNWR check station, for hunters without reservations who wish to hunt the Kern River Fan. Five reservations will be drawn with the remaining quota filled by lottery. Hunters will be able to check in beginning at 4:30 a.m. on hunt days (Wednesdays and Saturdays) at the Kern River Fan. The hunt area will have a capacity of 24 hunters. The number of hunters may be decreased or the hunt canceled due to water availability or other factors. Hunting will close at 1 p.m. No overnight parking will be permitted at the Kern River Fan, however, overnight parking will be permitted Tuesday and Friday evenings at the KNWR parking area. Daily entry permits are $14, Type A season and two-day passes are also accepted; junior hunters are free. All state and federal hunting regulations apply. Reservation applications must be received 10 days prior to the day you wish to hunt. Applications must include the hunter's name, address, day and evening phone numbers, and hunting license number, as well as desired hunt date. Hunters will be selected by a random computerized drawing and allowed to bring one adult guest and two junior hunters. Hunters may apply only once for each hunt date, either as an applicant or a guest. Multiple applications will be rejected.
