Get Ready for Quail Season
Get ready for quail season, which opens October 8 in Arizona. Be sure to scout and stock up on shotgun shells.

Arizona Game and Fish Department biologists say hunters should expect average to just below average Gambel’s quail numbers in most areas of Arizona, with the best concentrations likely to be found in the central part of the state.

“Hunters will find quail populations spotty and will likely have to do a lot of homework and walking to find decent shooting,” says Randy Babb, a biologist in the Mesa regional office of Game and Fish. “However, some good shooting is to be had for the committed sportsperson.”

Average Gambel’s quail populations in Arizona still equate to some of the best quail hunting opportunities in North America. Expect Gambel’s quail coveys to average six to 10 birds in poorer areas and up to 20 birds or better in spots that received good amounts of moisture last winter and spring.

“Areas with larger coveys will have more young birds and offer better shooting,” says Babb. “Concentrate your Gambel’s quail hunting efforts in areas that might have experienced better winter rains and held birds, even uncooperative ones, last year.”

When quail hunting, don’t neglect the cottontail rabbit hunting opportunities this year. Rabbits are bountiful in many areas of the state. “This is one of those years when it should be worthwhile to go rabbit hunting, especially with the kids,” says small game biologist Mark Zornes.
