Hunting Memories

Wow! First Archery Hunt

Thought you'd enjoy this picture of my first-ever archery hunt of any kind.

It started a couple of years ago when I drew a Devil's Garden muzzleloader tag in California. Knowing that this was the opportunity to get into some huge mule deer during the rut was very exciting, just to say the least. Well, things didn't go very well. The weather didn't cooperate and I only had six days to hunt as I needed to get back to the Bay Area to do a wedding (for my catering company). On my way out of the Garden I took a shot at a fair-sized deer. Not getting into a very lengthy story, I hit the deer but was unable to track it down. I was very upset at this as this had never happened to me in nearly 20 years of hunting. I kept blaming myself for not having the opportunities to practice with my muzzleloader, especially in the Bay Area and with a work schedule that is unrelenting. Anyway, I concluded that with the space I had in my backyard (bordering Golden Gate National Recreation Area), I could do all the practicing I needed "WITH A BOW."

I contacted my good friend and member of Primos Pro Staff, Matt Brimmer from Klamath Falls, Oregon and told him that I didn't have any knowledge of the current archery equipment on the market. Basically, I told him to build me the bow that he would build for himself, given his working knowledge of archery equipment. Well, at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) National in Reno in 2003, he showed up with my new bow. It's a beautiful Matthew's Legacy, with all the bells and whistles.

So practice I did. Sometimes I found myself with my headlamp on well into the night on my back hill, driving arrows into my Big Block target, and deer and turkey targets, at every distance and angle.

Eight months later I was on my way to Wyoming with another good buddy Rusty Lym, of Grizzly Peak Outfitter. Rusty set up a great camp right on the Utah border and we spent eight terrific days playing with, chasing, interacting and eventually taking a beautiful "first-time archery bull." I'm hooked!
