Hunting Memories

Double Beard

April 9, 2003 was a great day to turkey hunt on BLM land in California. I left home at 4:30 a.m. and as daylight came I had six toms within 100 yards, gobbling on the roost like crazy. After they flew down they came my way, a hen came within 10 feet and a tom 15 feet, but behind a tree. I couldn't take a shot. He and the other toms went to my right out of sight and I could not make a shot, they all then headed downhill into the brush and would not come to calls.

I decided to follow one and, boy, was he hot — he would gobble about every 2-3 minutes. After chasing him uphill, downhill and every where in between, I finally got close at 10 a.m. With a couple of soft yelps he came in to 27 yards in full strut and I took him. He was 22 pounds and had two beards (8 inches and 9 1/4 inches).
