The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is reminding the public to apply soon for the 60 special pheasant hunts to be held in Southern California.
"With the help of many dedicated hunt partners and volunteers, we provide a safe, controlled and learning environment to accommodate the first time and beginning pheasant hunter," said Scott Sewell, the Game Bird Heritage Southern California coordinator. There are 31 opportunities for family groups to hunt pheasants, five pheasant hunts for women hunters, and 24 pheasant hunts for junior hunters. The deadline to submit applications and be eligible for the random drawing is September 1, 2003. The Game Bird Heritage Program is funded through the sale of the Upland Game Bird Stamp. A valid California hunting license and upland game bird stamp is required to hunt upland game birds. This year the DFG has added new hunting opportunities in Ventura, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. "Public response to last year's hunts was tremendous, and due to the growing number of participants, the DFG is adding more hunts to the program," Sewell said. "Remember, you can only apply once a year to the hunt of your choice, either as an applicant or a guest, so plan accordingly and have a good time." Newly licensed hunters who have earned their Hunter Education certification may obtain a bonus certificate allowing the new hunter to participate in the pheasant hunt of their choice without being part of the random draw selection. Entering their application before the deadline, however, is still required. Applications can be obtained by contacting the Fish and Game Hotline at (562) 590-5100 or visiting our website at www.dfg.ca.gov. All applications must be delivered to: California Department of Fish and Game, Attention: Scott Sewell, Game Bird Heritage Program, 4665 Lampson Avenue, Suite C, Los Alamitos, California 90720. |
