The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) and Wilderness Unlimited (WU) will co-sponsor the Sixth Annual Wild Turkey Expo on Saturday, March 1, in Fair Oaks near Sacramento. The seminar is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church, 11427 Fair Oaks Blvd.
The popular, free event, which has drawn standing-room-only crowds in the past, will provide comprehensive information on wild turkey biology and hunting, with a strong focus on where to hunt turkeys on public land. Topics include: how to locate the birds; where to hunt on public land; turkey calling techniques; turkey behavior; the use of camouflage, shotguns and archery equipment; and wild turkey cooking tips. There will also be an equipment demonstration outside, weather permitting. Representatives from sporting goods manufacturers and hunting/conservation organizations will be on hand to display the latest equipment and share information about other hunting opportunities. Lunch will be provided. A $3 donation will be welcomed. The event's featured speaker will be veteran turkey hunter, outdoor writer and WU member Terry Knight, who will demonstrate turkey calling techniques, the effective use of decoys and camouflage, and proper archery and shotgun hunting techniques. Knight has served as the president of the California State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and operated a successful turkey guiding business for more than 11 years. He annually conducts several training seminars on hunting wild turkeys throughout Northern California. Dan Stahlman, an expert turkey hunter and gunsmith, will discuss shotgun selection, shooting, and patterning, and the proper loads to use. Back by popular demand will be a seminar on archery hunting for turkeys by Ron Sneed. Also, champion turkey caller Bruce Wurth, owner of American Friction which manufactures turkey calls, will be on hand to demonstrate his award-winning calls. A question and answer period will follow. DFG's wild turkey biologist Scott Gardner will offer insight on the wild turkey's habitat and where to find them on public lands. In addition to Gardner, other DFG personnel will be available to answer questions. The 6 1/2-hour seminar is free and open to the public. For information, contact Susan Herrgesell, Advanced Hunter Education Program Coordinator, DFG (916) 653-7448, and Terry Knight can be reached at (707) 263-1699. |
