Elk-Killing Mountain Lion |
|||||||||||||
Bill Topper (right), of Ada, Michigan, took this large, 160-pound tom mountain lion on November 27, 2001 while on a hunt in Wyoming. It was a three-hour chase in snow-covered mountains before the dogs finally jumped the lion off a mature 5-point bull elk it had killed. The cat was treed 200 yards from the elk on which he was feeding.
Topper used a 24 Ackley Improved shooting a 70-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet to make this the last elk the tom killed. Topper was hunting with Dan Powers (left) of Powder Horn Outfitters. In addition to guiding for mountain lions, Powder Horn Outfitters also guides for elk and mule deer in some of Wyoming's best hunting country.
