The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), Wilderness Unlimited and the Wild Turkey Federation will co-sponsor the third annual Wild Turkey Extravaganza on Sunday, March 5, 2000.
The turkey hunting seminar, which is free, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the first floor auditorium of the Resources Building, 1416 Ninth St., in Sacramento. Because the event is on a Sunday, plenty of free on-street parking will be available. As it did last year, the seminar will provide hunting tips and comprehensive information on wild turkey biology. Virtually every aspect of turkey hunting will be covered, including where to locate the birds, where to hunt them on public lands, calling, turkey habits, camouflage, and the use of shotguns and archery equipment. Scott Gardner, DFG's wild turkey biologist, will offer insight to hunters and naturalists on the wild turkey's habits. In addition, Gardner and other DFG biologists will be available to answer questions. The featured speaker of the event will be veteran turkey hunter and writer Terry Knight, who is frequently published in several outdoor publications. Knight has served as the president of the California State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and has operated a successful turkey guide business for more than a decade. Knight conducts several training seminars every year on hunting wild turkeys. NWTF's Women in the Outdoors Program is sponsoring a new addition to this year's extravaganza an opportunity to get some hands-on experience right after the event ends at 2 p.m. Those interested will be going out to the Sacramento Bypass Wildlife Area to pattern shotguns, learn to gauge distance, set up decoys, and get any other questions answered. Maps to the area will be available at the meeting. The seminar is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis with limited seating. Membership in Wilderness Unlimited or any organization is not required. Wilderness Unlimited can be contacted by calling (510) 785-4868. Terry Knight can be reached at (707) 263-1699. |
